Skiing in Zermatt, Switzerland

It’s hardly difficult since the frequently running train also makes right from the Geneva airport – no need to go into town. I confess, though, traveling to get a few hours. Hint: Grab a snack for the train. Oddly there is absolutely no snack car on the train to Zermatt. I come here in the summer months to take part in the Tour Du Mont Blanc, through the tourdumontblanc.holiday website.

Three lift stations, the Gornergrat Railway, the Sunnegga Funicular, along with the Furi Gondola, wing skiers away across this mountain paradise. From fulfilling crimsons and undulating blues to acres of off piste, Zermatt has it all. The resort is home to a network of 200km of pistes across three sections – Sunnegga Bauherd Rothorn, Gornergrat-Stockhorn and Trockener Steg-Schwarzsee, with top stations over 3,000 m. There’s also easy access with the linked slopes of Cervinia and Valtournenche supplying another 150km of pistes, to the Italian side of the mountain. The nursery slopes are high and also have fantastic views and reliable snow.

Every square inch of the lovely skiing-town tucked away into the Swiss Alps that are commanding is THAT ADORABLE. I’m embarrassed it’s taken me so long to blog about it! D and I took a trip to Zermatt last MLK Day weekend and I still can’t get over our time was there. It snowed pails virtually every day, making for some tough whiteout ski conditions, but some seriously beautiful scenery from the slopes. We stayed in the center of Zermatt with uninhibited views of the Matterhorn at the Plateau Rosa Hotel. Well, virtually uninhibited. The snow clouds hung low on the tip of the Matterhorn but we still caught peeks of it there and here. That first picture was the view from our balcony. Dreamlike, right? Just like a page from a storybook, that view.

Free stuff to do. It is not all about skiing.

— Turn up at twirl round the tremendous natural ice rink and the Spielplatz with your skates. Before you can stand up by yourself, for novices, you can hold onto giant skating penguins
— There are many different sledge runs, all of them quite exhilarating, some maybe too much so!
— Walking: the walking trails above Zermatt are kept in tip top condition by a team of dedicated workers. See my Elysian Collection website by what occurs to your old Christmas tree after Christmas…
It costs nothing to go into Cuckoo Nightclub,Vernissage, The Cavern, Gees, Broken and boogie the night away.
